Disposal Guide
The Netherlands Institute of Sustainable Packaging (KIDV) administers the Disposal Guide. This is a guide that helps producers and buyers of packaging and consumers with the proper separation and disposal of packaging material.
Packaging can only be optimally processed and recycled if it enters the proper waste stream after use. Over the years, consumers have gotten access to more and more opportunities to separate waste. This has gradually made the disposal of packaging more complicated, because what should go where?
The Disposal Guide helps with this. They consist of a set of logos that indicate to which categories of waste the different parts of a packaging belong. Consumers can see at a glance how where each packaging (or its components) should be disposed of.
New logos in the works
Keep in mind that the current set of Weggooiwijzer logos is due for an update. The reason for this is that in March 2024, a new yes/no list (only available in Dutch) will be published, which will state what type of waste belong with the PMD (plastic, metal and beverage cartons). The Weggooiwijzer is based on this yes/no list, and will therefore be updated in 2024 as a result of the publication.
Work is also underway at the European level on international Discarding Guide logos, but these are not yet in place. Uniform European logos are expected to be introduced in 2028. Currently, each EU member state uses its own logos/symbols, which best reflect the situation in the country in question. Therefore, the Dutch set of logos is also designed and intended exclusively for the Dutch market.
Logos versus recyclability
Existing logos are designed to help consumers dispose of their waste properly. They do not guarantee whether or not the packaging will be sorted and recycled. If you, as a producer, want to assess the recyclability of your packaging, consult the KIDV Recyclechecks.
Getting started with the logos
Below are some examples of Weggooiwijzer logos. For further explanation on how to use the Weggooiwijzer, you can download the manual. The logos themselves can be requested at weggooiwijzer@verpact.nl. Use of the logos is voluntary and there is no charge for them.
Note: Given the changes coming into effect over the next few years, the KIDV recommends that new logos be printed only when introducing new packaging or updated designs. In both cases, adjusting the printing can be included in the process. This way unnecessary waste of packaging can be avoided.
