Tetra Pak’s bio-based beverage carton for Vecozuivel
In 2015, Tetra Pak launched an entirely bio-based beverage container, the so-called Tetra Rex® Bio Based. This development is in line with Tetra Pak’s sustainability strategy to supply 100% renewable packaging by 2020.
This packaging consists largely of FSC®-certified paper. Bio-based plastic made of sugar cane is used to create the plastic layers in the packaging. The raw materials are renewable and not depleted, provided they are managed in a responsible way. Thus, there is no need to use raw materials derived from fossil fuel.
Flevoland-based dairy Vecozuivel was the first company on the Dutch market to opt for the bio-based beverage carton. The company will make a phased transition to these. The plastic layers in the carton have already been replaced with bio-based material and the cap will be modified later. The bio-based beverage carton reduces CO2 emissions by up to 35% compared to standard beverage cartons for chilled dairy products. The containers are completely recyclable.
